Amazon on Monday launched a tool named Kindle Convert for PC that lets users convert printed books to Kindle ebooks. The software is available to buy at $19 (roughly Rs. 1,200) and is compatible with Windows 7 and Windows 8-based devices.
Users, in order to get their physical books converted into digital Kindle ebooks, would have to use a scanner that can produce jpeg, tiff or pdf files at 300-600 DPI, 24-bit colour depth or 8-bit grayscale or black and white colour compatibility. This includes most scanners found on most all-in-one printers.

First spotted by The Ebook Reader, Amazon Kindle Convert is currently limited to the US region, and features a $49 (roughly Rs. 3,000) full list price. The software includes automatic alignment and text editing functionalities. It also preserves the original text and images used in the book, and lets users adjust fonts.
Once scanned, the book can be saved in Kindle eBook format and added to the user's Amazon Cloud Drive storage, and Whispersync functionality is also present to let users pick up where they left off across devices. Smart Lock may sound familiar to Android users with devices already updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The feature allows you to set specific locations as safe zones, or Bluetooth devices as trusted connections, both of which disable your device's security screen.
First, make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS by launching Settings and clicking onAbout Chrome OS.

Chrome OS version 40 or higher has Smart Lock enabled. After your Chromebook is updated, sign into your account and click on your profile picture followed by Settings then Show Advanced

Instead of relying on a Bluetooth connection or NFC tag, you can now set "safe" locations in which your device will remain unlocked. Leave that zone, and your device will lock and require your security code or pattern to be entered.

Setting up a location for Smart Lock is simple, following the same steps :-

• Launch the Settings app.
• Select Security from the list.
• Tap Smart Lock followed by Trusted Places.

If Trusted Places isn't an option, you'll need to wait until the Play Services update is pushed to your device.

If you've entered your Home and Work locations into Google Maps or Google Now, they'll be listed with a toggle switch next to each one. Additionally, you can add more locations by tapping on "add trusted place" and using an interactive map.

Apple introduced its Continuity feature that lets you field phone calls and text messages from your iOS devices and Mac. I enjoy being able to respond to texts from my MacBook Pro and iPad when my iPhone is charging, but I'm less sold on sharing phone calls between all three devices. I don't like the cacophony of ringtones when all three devices are nearby, and I find that even when it's charging, my iPhone is never too far away that I can't grab it to take a call.

I have followed my colleague's directions so my Mac doesn't ring anymore when I get a call, but I also want to disable the feature on my iPad. Installation process

Step one: Find a spare SD card and format in-camera. Then, head to the Magic Lantern downloads page and choose your model number from the list.

Step two: Make sure the official firmware on your camera is up to date. The Magic Lantern download page will tell you which is the latest version number. Check what is installed on your camera by choosing any of the manual exposure modes (PASM) on the dial, then press the Menu button. Scroll through until you find the version number.
If required, head to Canon's official support site and download the latest version of the firmware for your dSLR.

Step three: Connect the SD card to your PC or Mac and download the Magic Lantern build for your camera. Extract the zip archive, then put all those files in the root directory of the SD card.

Step four: Insert the SD card into the camera and turn it on. Install the firmware by going to Menu and finding the firmware option. Press Set and confirm your selection to update the firmware. You will be prompted to restart the camera by turning the power off and on again.

Step five: Clear any custom settings by pressing Menu, and find Clear settings. Exit the Canon menu system by pressing Menu again, then press the trash can button to bring up the Magic Lantern options.

Here's how to share files (including photos, documents and videos) in Windows 10:

Step 1: Find the file you want to share

Open up the File Explorer and navigate to the file or files you want to share. You can share any file type, although you cannot share any file type with any app. (For example, you can't share DLL files to Facebook -- I tried). Select the file you want to share by clicking on it.

Step 2: Open the Sharing menu

While there is a one-click Share button in the File Explorer, it's actually hidden inside the Sharing menu. Click Share to open up the sharing menu. Depending on what type of file you have selected, different options in the Sharing menu will be available to you. For example, if you've selected a folder, and not a file, the Share button will be grayed out and the Zip button will be available. From the Sharing menu, you can also zip, burn, print and fax files, as well as modify network sharing options.

Step 3: Click the Share button

The Share button has the same three-dot-circle icon as the Windows 8 Share charm. Click the Share button to open up the Share sidebar.

Step 4: Choose the program you want to share with

In the Share sidebar, you'll see a list of apps you can share your file with. Again, depending on the file type you're trying to share, some apps may not show up. Facebook and Twitter will not show up if you're trying to share a zipped folder, but Mail will. 

Step 5: Configure your Sharing options

By default, the Share sidebar shows the apps you share with most often -- to change this and other Sharing options, go to the Settings menu, click on System, and open the Share tab. Here you can toggle the frequently used apps list on and off, choose how many items appear in that list, and turn sharing on and off altogether for certain apps.

How to Use Your Laptop as a Wi-Fi Hotspot

Internet sharing on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1

Thankfully, there are quite a few apps that let you use your machine as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you use any of these apps, you may want to check the steps on Microsoft's site to see Windows' built-in Internet sharing and see if you have better luck than we did. We do recommend that you skip that and use a third-party app instead, since the experience is usually much better.
We tested some popular apps that let you do this - Connectify and Virtual Router Plus. The latter didn't work very well for us. Our anti-virus flagged it as a threat and during installation it tried to make us install unwanted software.
We didn't have the same issues with Connectify. It is a reliable app for turning your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Before you proceed, know that you will need a Windows PC with a Wi-Fi adapter (or built-in Wi-Fi) to make this work. If your computer does not have Wi-Fi, then you can buy one that connects via USB, such as this one.
Here are the steps to setup your Windows machine as a Wi-Fi hotspot:
1. Download Connectify and install it. The installation is pretty straightforward and when installation is complete, restart your computer.
2. After restarting the computer, check whether it is connected to the Internet. If it is, run the Connectify Hotspot app.
3. You'll see two tabs in the app - Settings and Clients. In the Settings tab, under "Create a..." click Wi-Fi Hotspot.
4. Under Internet to Share, you'll see a drop-down menu. Expand it and select the connection you want to share. We tested this app with a wired and a wireless connection and found that it worked perfectly with both.
5. Under that, you'll see some more options. Add a Wi-Fi password. Click Start Hotspot.
That's all you need to do. Now other devices will detect a Wi-Fi network labelled Connectify-me. Key in the password and you're good to go.

Connectify is a paid app, but it has a stripped down free version. You can create a hotspot with the free version, but the main limitation is that it automatically disconnects every 30 minutes and shows pop-ups asking you to buy the pro version. You'll have to re-enable the hotspot manually to start using it again.
The Pro version has more features and costs $25 (Rs. 1,550) for a year and $40 (Rs. 2,450) for a full licence. Apart from unlimited hotspot uptime, you get features such as custom hotspot naming, the ability to share Internet from 3G and 4G networks (for sharing USB Internet dongles), and advanced firewall controls (choose which devices can access Internet and personal files on your LAN).
Internet Sharing on OS X
Mac users have it a lot easier. Here's how to share your Mac's Internet connection.
1. Open System Preferences > Sharing > check Internet Sharing on the left.
2. On the right, expand the drop-down menu next to Share your connection from: and select the connection you want to share. You can share Internet connections from Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or even iPhone USB.
Typically, you'd want to select Ethernet, if you are using a wired Internet connection iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook Pro. If you are using an external Ethernet adapter with a MacBook Air, you'll want to select USB Ethernet or Thunderbolt Ethernet, depending upon the kind of dongle you are using (usually it's USB).
3. Just below that, there's a box next to To computers using: where you should check the box next to Wi-Fi.
4. Click the Wi-Fi Options button below the box. Pick a Network Name, Security Type and enter the password twice in fields named Password and Verify. We strongly recommend you choose a password, instead of leaving the Security option has None. You can leave Channel as the default value unless you know what you are doing. Click OK.
5. If the connection is active, you'll see a green icon and text Internet Sharing: On under System Preferences.
That's all. You'll be able to use the Internet on other devices now by connecting to the network you specified under Network Name.

How to Securely Delete All Data From Your Android Phone

microSD card
The first decision you need to make is about the microSD card. In case your old phone has a microSD card, you can simply insert the card in your new phone and continue using it - most data like photos, videos etc. should get migrated seamlessly.
In case your new phone does not have a microSD card slot, or you would not like to carry forward the card for some reason then you should delete all the data on the card by formatting it. First, back up all your pictures and videos.
1. Connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable. If you are on a Mac, make sure you have the Android File Transfer application installed before you do this.
2. Open My Computer on your PC, or Finder on your Mac.
3. Navigate to the SD card and copy all the files you want to save to your computer.
4. After the copying is done, you can unplug your phone.
Now, you can format your memory card.
1. On your phone, go to Settings > Storage.
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Erase SD card. You'll see a warning message telling you that you'll lose all the data on the card.
3. Tap the Erase SD card button to continue. If your SD card is secured with a password, you'll need to enter the PIN to continue.
A determined person can still recover your files from a formatted SD card, but the easiest way to deal with this is by "layering". Simply put, fill the space with something else, delete it, and repeat this process a couple of times and your original data is gone forever.
So for example, if you have a 2GB microSD card you've erased - reconnect it to your PC, and copy a file that's about 2GB to the card. Delete the file right away. Do this again, two or three times. The whole process shouldn't take more than ten minutes, but you can then safely sell the card as well.
Backing up the data on your phone
The most important thing to do is to ensure that you don't lose any of your contacts or pictures. The good thing with Android is that you need a Google account to set up the phone, and it automatically backs up your device. To make sure that this is the case, do the following.
1. On your phone, go to Settings > Backup & reset.
2. You should see a setting called Back up my data. Make sure that it's ticked.
3. Next, press Back, and then scroll down to ACCOUNTS. Tap on Google.
4. You'll see your Google account which was used to set up the phone with a green sync symbol next to it. Tap the account.
5. Make sure that all the options are ticked - this will use your Google account to sync everything from your calendar to contacts to email to the photos that you take, which get automatically backed up to Google+.
6. Not all versions of Android automatically back up pictures. We checked on a 2011 Samsung Galaxy Note and didn't see the option, while the recent Moto E does have this option. In case your phone does not support this, you'll have to use a PC to back up media via the USB as described above.
7. Back up any other media files to your computer by connecting the phone to your PC using a USB cable. Follow the steps in the first half of the SD card section above to copy the files to your computer.
This option will also backup the application data for some of your apps. Apps need to be registered with the Android operating system for this backup and restore service to work, and not all your apps may support this. To be safe, we recommend manually backing application data for all your favourite apps, like this method for backing up your WhatsApp messages.
Delete everything
Now that you've made a backup, you can safely delete everything on your phone. This is what you do.
First, fully erase the SD card as discussed above or take it out and keep it safely if you plan to use it in your new phone.
A simple factory reset will delete everything on your phone, but this data can still be recovered by a really determined user. If you want to be really sure no one can recover your data even after it is deleted then make sure you enable hardware encryption on your phone. For most people it should be safe to skip steps 1 and 2 and jump straight to step 3.
1. Go to Settings > Security and tap Encrypt phone. This takes a long time, so you need to connect your phone to the charger to proceed.
2. Tap Encrypt phone again to proceed. Some people have noted that at times this doesn't work right away, and you might need to try it a few times.
The process can take an hour, and so you'll need to leave your phone on the charger and wait.
Once this is done, just reset the phone:
3. Go to Settings > Backup & reset. Tap Factory data reset. On the next screen, tick the box marked Erase phone data. You can also choose to remove data from the memory card on some phones - so be careful what button you tap on.
4. You'll see a warning screen - tap Reset phone to continue.
5. This process may take a few minutes and your phone should reboot to the state that it shipped in, prompting you to choose language and sign-in all over again.
Congratulations, you've deleted all the data on your Android phone.

How to Enable and Use Continuity, Handoff Features on iPhone

1. Handoff: The ability to pick up where you left off with apps. Whether it's wrapping up an unfinished message on Mail or a document in Pages, these automatically sync across Apple devices with Handoff. Third-party developers can add this feature to their apps too, though remember it won't work for third-party apps unless they have been explicitly updated to support Handoff across various devices.
2. Instant Hotspot: Lets your Apple devices share a mobile Internet connection easily. You don't need to enter a password to connect to the hotspot as long as your devices support this feature.
3. Phone calls: You can make and receive phone calls using any supported Apple device.
4. Text messages: In addition to sending iMessages like you always have, you can now also send and receive text messages using any supported Apple device.

Will it work on my Apple device?
Handoff and Instant Hotspot work on the following devices running iOS 8.1 or above:

1. iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6 and 6 Plus
2. iPhone 4s (only for sharing iPhone calls)
3. iPad (4th gen), iPad Air, iPad Air 2
4. iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPad mini 3
5. iPod touch (5th generation)

The other Continuity features will run on any device that supports iOS 8.1 or OS X Yosemite.

How to setup Continuity
You need to ensure four things before you can use all Continuity features. These are:

1. All of your devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
2. You have signed in to the same iCloud account on all your devices.
3. You've signed in to FaceTime using the same iCloud account on all devices.
4. Your devices are near each other and have Bluetooth switched on.

When you've done these things, Continuity will work because it is enabled by default. Here's how to manually enable all features, in case of any issues.

Handoff
1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > On.
2. On your Mac, go to System Preferences > General > check Allow Handoff.
Once you've done this, and, say, you are composing an email on your iPhone and have the Mac nearby, Mail will show up in the Dock. Clicking on this will let you continue composing the email exactly where you left off without having to save a draft first on your iPhone, then finding it on the Mac and so on.
Conversely, if you start something on the Mac, an icon will pop up on your iPhone or iPad and you can tap it to quickly finish the task. At launch, Handoff works with Apple apps like Mail, Safari, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Calendar, and Contacts, but a host of third-party apps should add support soon.
Instant Hotspot
1. Settings > Personal Hotspot > On. You can do this on your iPhone or an iPad.
2. Now the mobile Internet connection will show up as a hotspot on your Apple devices. You can connect to it without entering the password, as long as you meet requirements like proximity and being signed in with the same Apple ID.

SmartNav 5 projects a 5-inch screen into the middle of its rear-view mirror. The projection is translucent, letting drivers focus on the mirror image instead of the screen if they so choose. The device features automatic day and night modes, changing the brightness so as not to interfere with the simple mirror projection.

One of the more intriguing features requires an App-Tronics accessory radar detector mounted on the front of the car. SmartNav 5 shows an alert on its screen whenever the accessory detects police radar, and includes a live database of recorded speed traps.

The SmartNav5 not only includes a series of buttons along the lower bezel to bring up different features, but also incorporates a touchscreen so drivers can enter addresses for navigation. The full, icon-covered screen of the SmartNav 5 may seem like a safety hazard, but drivers can choose different themes that limit the display to as little as three icons.

The SmartNav 5 rear-view mirror casing includes a small computer running Windows CE, hosting a variety of useful driving apps. It runs iGo navigation software, giving drivers turn-by-turn route guidance. There is a video recorder tied to a front-facing camera, which works as an incident recorder in case of a crash, similar to current dash-mounted crash recorders. App-Tronics even includes a Bluetooth phone connection, as the SmartNav 5 can be wired to the car's audio system. It shows performance gauges, such as a digital speedometer, but this data is derived from the GPS chip in the unit, rather than the car's own CAN bus system.

Ricoh's Theta is a slim stick of a camera that, with a single press of its shutter release, captures the entire scene around you -- top to bottom -- in one shot.

The shots played with on a Windows or Mac computer, or iOS or Android devices, are pretty awesome all things considered.

The new second-generation Ricoh Theta M15 is capable of capturing spherical videos up to three minutes long that Ricoh says have no stitch lines when processed with its video-creation tool that's part of the Theta's Windows or Mac application.

Like its photos, the Theta's image size, shape and composition can be changed simply by pushing it around with your fingers on a touchscreen or with your mouse. You'll also be able to share up to six seconds of video using Ricoh's dedicated site, which can then be pushed out to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

Ricoh is also opening up its API and providing a SDK so others can develop apps for the camera.

The Ricoh Theta M15 arrives in November for about $300 in the US ($100 less than the original) and around £270 in the UK. Australian pricing wasn't announced, but it converts to roughly AU$338.

How to add more camera modes on Galaxy S5 and Note 4

Both the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 are excellent options with their 16-megapixel cameras. As a bonus, these devices offer camera modes to get just the right shot.

Camera modes -- such as Animated photo, Sports or Panorama -- offer more control over the performance of your device's ability to take photos. While some camera modes come installed by default, Samsung offers extras through the Galaxy Apps store. Here's how to add more of them to your Note 4 or S5:

 

Step 1: Open the Camera app and tap on the Mode button.

Step 2: Scroll through the list until you reach the end, where you will find a tile named Download. Tap this and you'll enter the Galaxy Apps store.

Step 3: You'll be presented with a list of available camera modes. These are all offered by Samsung and can be downloaded for free by tapping on each one and pressing "Install."
